FAQ

Design & Craftsmanship

Questions exploring the inspiration, proportions, craftsmanship and sculptural details behind the product.

Why choose a tsavorite engagement ring? +
A tsavorite engagement ring offers something genuinely distinctive. The vibrant green colour feels fresh, individual and full of character, while the gemstone's natural brilliance creates a lively display of light. Many clients choose tsavorite because they want an engagement ring that stands apart from more traditional diamond designs.
Why does tsavorite work so well in the Asteria design? +
Asteria was designed around the celebration of light. Tsavorite's vivid green colour and excellent brilliance work beautifully with the ring's triangular sunburst structure and intricate lattice setting. The smaller tsavorites gradually become lighter in colour as they move away from the centre stone, creating a subtle transition that draws the eye naturally towards the heart of the ring. Together these details create a striking balance of colour, light and craftsmanship.
Why do the tsavorites change colour within the setting? +
The smaller tsavorites surrounding the centre stone have been carefully selected to become gradually lighter as they move away from the centre. This subtle graduation of colour creates depth and movement within the design while drawing attention back towards the central gemstone. It is a detail that many people do not notice immediately, but it contributes significantly to the overall character of the ring.
Is Asteria a traditional or contemporary engagement ring? +
Asteria combines both approaches. The overall proportions feel classic, while the triangular detailing, lattice setting and vivid green centre stone introduce a more contemporary character. Many clients see it as a modern classic rather than a conventional engagement ring.
Who does the Asteria Tsavorite ring suit? +
This ring appeals to someone who values individuality and thoughtful design. It is often chosen by people who love colour, appreciate unusual gemstones and want a distinctive engagement ring that remains elegant and wearable.
What is a tsavorite? +
Tsavorite is a vivid green gemstone from the garnet family, prized for its exceptional brilliance, rarity and typically untreated nature. Many gemstone enthusiasts regard it as one of the most beautiful green gemstones available for jewellery. Unlike emeralds, tsavorites are often cleaner and brighter, allowing their natural colour and sparkle to take centre stage.
Is tsavorite rarer than emerald? +
High-quality tsavorite is generally rarer than emerald. Although emerald is the more famous gemstone, fine tsavorite is found in relatively limited locations and remains unfamiliar to many jewellery buyers. This combination of rarity and beauty makes it particularly appealing to collectors and gemstone enthusiasts.
Why choose tsavorite instead of emerald? +
Many people love emeralds but are attracted to tsavorite because of its brilliance, durability and typically untreated nature. Tsavorites often appear cleaner and brighter than emeralds, while still offering a rich and luxurious green colour. For those seeking a green gemstone engagement ring, tsavorite offers a compelling combination of rarity, beauty and everyday practicality.
Are tsavorites treated? +
No. Unlike many emeralds, tsavorites are typically untreated. The colour you see is natural, which is one reason many gemstone collectors and jewellery lovers value them so highly. Their vivid green colour occurs naturally and does not usually require enhancement.
Is a tsavorite engagement ring suitable for everyday wear? +
Yes. Tsavorite is a durable gemstone suitable for engagement rings when worn with sensible care. While it is not as hard as a diamond, it performs very well in jewellery intended for regular wear. As with any coloured gemstone, we recommend removing your ring during activities that may expose it to unusual impacts, abrasion or heavy wear.
Does tsavorite sparkle like a diamond? +
Tsavorite has excellent brilliance and often surprises people with the amount of light it returns. While its appearance differs from a diamond, it displays a lively brightness that works particularly well in designs such as Asteria where light plays an important role.
Which metals work best with tsavorite? +
Tsavorite works exceptionally well in 18ct yellow gold and 18ct rose gold, while platinum creates a crisp, contemporary look. Yellow and rose gold enhance the warmth and richness of the green gemstone, creating a particularly striking combination.
Can I choose a different coloured gemstone in the Asteria setting? +
Yes. The Asteria design works beautifully with a variety of coloured gemstones, including sapphires, rubies and other carefully selected stones. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss alternative options.
What is the hero detail of the Asteria ring? +
The hero detail is the lattice-style gemstone setting on the side of the ring. Many people first notice the centre stone and radiant upper structure, but the side profile often becomes their favourite feature. The intricate latticework brings delicacy and refinement to the overall design.
Why is the lattice setting so unusual? +
The lattice setting combines fine metalwork with precisely positioned gemstones. Achieving this level of detail requires considerable skill from the setter and finisher. Few rings devote this much attention to the side profile, which is one reason Asteria feels so distinctive.
Why did Andrew spend so much time designing the side of the ring? +
Andrew believes engagement rings should be beautiful from every angle. A ring is viewed in motion, held in the hand, admired by its owner and occasionally examined closely. The side profile deserves just as much consideration as the top view. Asteria was designed as a complete object rather than a ring that only looks good in photographs.
What inspired the design of Asteria? +
Asteria takes its name from the Greek goddess of falling stars. The ring was designed during a particularly memorable chapter in Andrew's life, when he, Lindsay, Arthur and their two Vizslas, Rupert and Izzy, were living in a caravan while their family home was being built. The experience created challenges but also space for reflection and creativity. Asteria became a celebration of light, optimism and the idea that beautiful things can emerge from difficult circumstances.
Who designed the Asteria ring? +
Andrew Geoghegan designed Asteria as part of his award-winning collection of British engagement rings. The ring reflects his fascination with light, proportion and the small details that transform a beautiful engagement ring into something memorable.

Ordering & Practical Details

Information about metals, diamonds, resizing, timings and viewing appointments.

Does Asteria sit flush with a wedding ring? +
Asteria does not usually sit flush with a straight wedding ring. Some clients enjoy the small gap this creates. Others choose one of our shaped Asteria wedding rings, designed to follow the contours of the setting more closely.
Can Asteria be resized after purchase? +
Asteria can be resized if required. Accurate sizing before manufacture is always preferable, but resizing remains possible in most cases. Please contact us if you would like assistance determining your finger size.
How long does Asteria take to make? +
Each Asteria ring is handmade to order in the UK and typically takes four to six weeks to complete. Production times can vary slightly depending on gemstone availability and any design modifications.
Can I view an Asteria Tsavorite ring in person? +
Please get in touch and we will do our best to arrange a viewing. We can also provide additional photographs, videos and CAD renders for clients selecting their ring remotely.
