The meteorite used is naturally resistant to corrosion. The meteroite’s nickel content encourages it to be naturally stain and rust resistant however some compositions can show rust. If discolouration does occur the surface of your stone can be gently cleaned with whitening toothpaste. The lattice work of meteorite can be enhanced using a nitric acid concoction.
You should avoid allowing meteorite jewellery to come into contact with products containing chlorine or bleach and anything acidic as this may cause discolouration and damage. It is best to avoid wearing your jewellery when doing manual labour or whilst handling any corrosive materials, for obvious reasons. The gibeon meteorite can be damaged if it receives a bang against a hard object so some care is required when you wear your piece. Try and avoid excessive contact with too much moisture.
The meteorite used in Andrew Geoghegan jewellery comes from the Gibeon Meteorite found in Namibia. The meteorite arrived on earth an estimated 30,000 years ago and was discovered in 1838. The meteorite is believed to be over four billion years old and is an incredibly rare stone to have in your jewellery.
The crystalline pattern of Gibeon Meteorite is created in outer space and is cause by the cooling of iron and nickel in an environment with little or no gravity. The slow cooling rate of 1 degree Celsius in a million years cannot be recreated on earth making the meteorite incredibly special.
