Take good care…

Aquamarine is a relatively hard stone however it is also quite brittle and will show signs of damage if worn every day – especially in open ring settings.  You can clean your aquamarine stone with a few drops of washing up liquid in water.  Use a toothbrush to gently scrub behind the stone, removing the dust and debris that can build up.

Try to avoid…

Protect your  aquamarine jewellery by storing it carefully when it’s not being used, preferably in the original box it came in or in a soft, lint-free pouch – to avoid scratching and rubbing.  Always store your aquamarine away from harder gems, such as diamonds, to prevent unnecessary damage.

About your stone…

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family which includes the Emerald.  The stone can be found in a range of pastel blue to greenish blue shades, from the palest blue to a deep sky blue.  Aquamarine is always predominantly blue in colour, however, the deeper the blue the more valuable the stone, with deepest blue found in larger stones due to colour saturation. Aquamarines are generally pale and are expected to have good clarity.  The stones are mined in far flung places like Madagascar and Zambia but most of the aquamarines today come from Brazil.  Aquamarine is often cut in oval and emerald cuts.

Pearls of wisdom…

Aquamarine is the birthstone for March.  Legend has it that aquamarine was the treasure of the mermaids holding the power to keep sailors safe at sea!  The stone is believed to have a soothing influence on married couples and is often bought as an anniversary gift to ensure a long and happy marriage.
